5000 Ways to Not Say It

5000 Ways to Not Say It is a participatory digital project that explores the language people use to avoid directly saying “I’m on my period.” Across cultures, menstruation is often surrounded by stigma, shame, and silence.

I created an open online form asking participants a simple question: “What do you say instead of ‘I’m on my period’?” Using the submissions, I designed and coded an interactive globe visualization. Each response appears as a point on a world map. When viewers hover over a dot, they can see the phrase submitted from that location, revealing how different communities navigate the same bodily experience through language.

The project highlights how something experienced by half the world’s population still requires indirect speech. By mapping euphemisms globally, 5000 Ways to Not Say It makes visible the linguistic strategies people use to navigate menstrual stigma. The work invites viewers to reflect on how language both reflects and reinforces cultural attitudes toward menstruation.

Through data visualization, participation, and digital interaction, the project asks a simple question:

Why are there so many ways to avoid saying something so ordinary?

Explore the project below. Hover over the dots on the globe to see how people around the world refer to menstruation without saying “I’m on my period.”
